'CULTURE OF NEIGHBOURHOOD' IN THE EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS OF
AUTONOMOUS REPUBLIC OF CRIMEA

Project goal: Creation and introduction of
the integrated course "Culture of Neighbourhood" in curricula
of educational institutions of the Crimea (kindergartens, schools,
institutions of higher learning, teachers training institute)
for the ethnic education of children and adults, formation of
tolerant interrelations among representatives of different ethnic
and confessional groups, getting skills of non-violent conflict
Target group: children from 4 till 21, studying
in the educational institutions of the Crimea, their parents,
university professors, school teachers, kindergarten tutors.
Project description: The integrated course
"Culture of neighbourhood" systemize knowledge that students
already have, and includes new knowledge of local ethnic groups'
history, geography, languages, literatures, religions, axiology
and cultures, provides with conflict resolution skills, practical
and research activities. The main purpose of the course is up-bringing
and education of socially competent, critically thinking and
tolerant personalities, citizens and patriots of the Crimea
and Ukraine, familiar with native land and proud of it, eager
and able to govern it, preserve and increase its natural, economical
and cultural potential. While developing the course the authors
studied and summarized the experience of other teachers of the
Crimea, obtained during summer "peace camps", round tables,
seminars and conferences on multicultural education, tolerance
and inter-ethnic cooperation. The course consists of the regional
program on intercultural education for pre-school children "Crimean
wreath", approved by the Ministry of education and science of
the Crimea on August 22, 2004 (minutes #6-4) and 12 interconnected
and structurally uniform programs for 1-12 grades (35 hours
per year), each with its own title, reflecting the core idea
of the course for respective grade. Each course consists of
the following thematic blocks: geography, local ethnic groups'
history, material and spiritual culture of local population,
world religions in the Crimea, arts and crafts, traditional
way of life and etiquette, language of a neighbour, axiology,
conflict resolution and mediation skills, practical and research
After three years approbation period the integrated course
"Culture of Neighborhood" was approved in full by the Ministry
of Education and Science of Crimea on December 27, 2006. The
course program "Fundamentals of Neighbourhood" for the Crimean
institutions of higher learning was approved on April 25, 2007.
During the 2007/2008 school year in total 128 (among them 68
schools and 4 institutions of higher learning) educational institutions
in 12 cities and 11 districts of the Crimea have included the
course in their curricula. Approximately 6,000 children and
students from 4 till 21 years old from 118 kindergarten groups,
267 school classes, 9 student groups together with 320 teachers
participate in the project. Working groups writing manuals for
the course include 43 persons. In 2007 two student's books were
published together with the manual "Ethnic History of the Crimea
According to the Censuses Results (in diagrams and schemes)".
During the approbation of the course the psychological monitoring
is provided in the experimental and parallel classes. The attitude
of students, teachers and parents is evaluated.
