ROUND TABLE ON GOVERNMENT ACTIVITIES TO COMBAT MANIFESTATIONS OF INTOLERANCE IN UKRAINIAN SOCIETY

Simferopol, Ukraine — 22 December, 2011:

On December 22, 2011 in Simferopol a round table discussion took place on «The coordination of law enforcement, executive, government and civil society organizations to combat manifestations of intolerance in Ukrainian society». The round table was the final event for the project «Management of inter-ethnic relations in Crimea by increasing the capacity of prosecutors in combating manifestations of intolerance in society», which is implemented by the independent Ukrainian Center for Political Studies (Kiev) and the Integration and Development Center for Information and Research (Simferopol) with the support of the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities.

The roundtable was attended by representatives of executive authorities of the Verkhovna Rada of Crimea and representatives from the Prosecutor's Office, Interior Ministry and Security Services.

The purpose of the roundtable was to foster interaction between civil society organizations, law enforcement agencies, and state and local authorities in responding to acts of intolerance and xenophobia in Crimean society; as well as to identify opportunities and challenges for the development of effective cooperation between these parties.

In the ensuing discussion, the roundtable participants discussed various topics including: examples of the legal response to public expressions of prejudice in Crimea; challenges and successes of cooperation between NGOs and government and law enforcement officers; issues of media coverage of intolerance; and joint public actions aimed at countering the stated challenges.
